Leg Pain in Children: The Different Types of Arthritis Kids Suffer From

Arthritis in children can be divided into two main types:

  • Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) – This is the most common type of arthritis seen in children and is characterized by persistent joint inflammation lasting for at least six weeks. Apart from causing leg pain in children, it may affect one or multiple joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and even loss of joint movement.
  • Infectious Arthritis – Also known as septic arthritis, this type occurs when a bacterial or viral infection is introduced directly into a joint. It may be caused by a traumatic injury, a long-term illness, or an infection in another part of the body. Symptoms include fever, rapid swelling, and pain in one or more joints.

What Causes Arthritis in Children?

A variety of factors, including genetics, injury, or infection, can cause arthritis leg pain in children. In some cases, the cause is unknown.

Diagnosis of Arthritis

Recognizing the symptoms of this condition can be challenging for even experienced physicians. Therefore, ruling out other possible causes, such as infections, injuries, allergic reactions, or other autoimmune diseases that attack normal body parts, may require multiple tests and some time.

The tests usually include X-rays or MRIs and urine and blood tests that look for things like rheumatoid factors, abnormalities in blood cells, or different protein markers. Because many of these types of arthritis are systemic, they can affect more than one joint or body part, such as the eyes, jaw, or skin. If left untreated, joints may deteriorate and become misshapen, potentially leading to the need for surgery.

Treatment for Arthritis at Our Facility: Pain Reliever for Kids & More

The objective is to alleviate swelling, stiffness, and pain symptoms since there is currently no cure for the disease. However, with prompt detection and treatment, the illness can enter a state of remission where it seems to be absent entirely. These remission periods may last a while or act as a break between flare-ups.

For effective treatment, it is advisable to use a comprehensive approach that includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, physical activity, appropriate orthotics or splints, and specialized medication (pain reliever for kids) as required by a pediatric specialist. The exercises primarily aim at reducing pain and improving the range of motion while enhancing muscle and bone strength through stretching and other techniques. Heat may be used to relieve tightness and spasms, while cold can help reduce swelling and pain. Massage therapy can also be helpful.

Proper treatment and care can help many children with childhood arthritis live a full, healthy, and happy life, so there is hope.
