How we do it

Frequently Asked Questions

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has helped thousands of patients lead happier, healthier lives. Lasers are fast becoming mainstay in surgery, laparoscopy and physiotherapy. They offer precise control, targeting and safe results. However, since they are relatively newer technology, it is but natural patients will have questions. Here we answer some of the most common questions we hear from patients. If you want to know or have any other doubts, feel free to call us at 1888 883 4610.

What is low level laser therapy? Is it the same as cold laser therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) and cold laser therapy (CLT) refer to one and the same thing: the use of visible and near infrared lasers for tissue healing, pain reduction, weight loss, skin tightening, infection treatment and more. As new lasers are being developed, the range of treatments is growing rapidly too.

A ‘low level laser’ or ‘cold laser’ refers to both the wavelength of the laser as well as its low energy state. These lasers are best absorbed by the skin, subcutaneous tissue (under the skin) and fat cells. ‘High level lasers’ or ‘hot lasers’ are used in surgical procedures such as to destroy tumors.

If you hear the following terms, they also refer to Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): low power laser therapy (LPLT), soft laser biostimulation, photobiomodulation.

How does low level laser therapy work?

Low level lasers can range anywhere from 400 – 700 nanometres (nm), depending on the specific application. These wavelengths of light in the visible and near infrared spectrum are used precisely because of their absorption rates under the skin.

The lasers deliver billions of photons (packets of energy) that are absorbed by the mitochondria in the body’s cells. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells and when activated by lasers produce Adenosine Triphosphate. This increased energy state enhances the body’s natural chemical processes, encouraging healing and fat reduction.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) can also increase blood flow in the region and interact with collagen.

Does laser therapy really work?

Absolutely! Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a clinically proven and medically recommended means of weight loss, physiotherapy and skin condition treatment. The laser medical equipment we use has been comprehensively evaluated for effectiveness by the U.S. FDA and Health Canada, and been market cleared. These are Class II laser devices that require supervised use.

A common theme for our weight loss, body measurement and infection treatments is that patients see and feel results after just a single session. In physiotherapy, such as for treatments addressing chronic pain or muscle injuries, patients should expect to feel noticeable improvement only after a few sessions.

Do I need a referral from a physician to receive therapy?

No, you do not require a referral from a doctor to receive Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). We have medical registered professionals at our clinic who will be able to advise you on treatment options.

How much does laser therapy cost?

For specific pricing of treatment plans, speak to an Ohr Medical representative. However, the cost of low laser therapy is much lower than surgical options; it is comparable to physiotherapy and pharmacological treatments.

If your health plan provides for chiropractic treatment or physiotherapy, laser therapy should be covered as well. We will also be providing easy financing options for treatments in due course.

Is low level laser therapy safe?

Yes, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been deemed safe by the U.S. FDA and Health Canada. Lasers are low power and do not do any harm to the body.

Treatments are pain-free, no downtime, no side effects and do not require any medication. Unlike surgical options there is no scarring. There is also no risk of addiction or habit formation.

What are the side effects of Low Level Laser Therapy?

Extensive clinical research and testing by health regulators has found no side effects or side events arising from Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Part of the reason for this is that lasers utilize the body’s natural processes to achieve desired results.

It is why patients of all ages, body weights, and pre-existing conditions can avail treatment. If you have any concerns, schedule an appointment with a registered medical professional at Ohr Medical today.
